Higgins Beach: A Classic Maine Coast Community
SCARBOROUGH, MAINE
With a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean, Higgins Beach looks out onto Ram and Richmond Islands off Cape Elizabeth. The fine sandy beach stretches about a half mile from the "cliffs" to the Spurwink River. Tidepools invite exploration, the waves beckon surfers and paddlers, while searching for sand dollars and treasures is enjoyed by all. Just past the shipwreck, birders can spot endangered piping plovers and least terns.
Nearby Pine Point with the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center is great for a canoe tour of the Scarborough Marsh. Just a few minutes to the south is Old Orchard Beach, a New England seaside resort town with amusement park. Within minutes of Higgins Beach is Portland Head Light, our most famous lighthouse, and Two Lights State Park with access to Maine's magnificent rockbound coast. Portland, rich in history, with many fine restaurants, cultural attractions, shopping in the charming Old Port and a busy working waterfront is minutes away. Schooner day trips, chartered fishing tours, or a ride on the ferry let you discover the islands of Casco Bay. For those ready to venture further, what's a trip to Maine without a stop at LLBean in Freeport, or the picturesque harbor towns of Boothbay and Camden, or Acadia National Park.
